Foreword

The Agricultural Machinery Testing and Evaluation Center (AMTEC), in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture (DA), Bureau of Postharvest Research and Extension (BPRE), National Agriculture and Fishery Council (NAFC), Philippine Society of Agricultural Engineers (PSAE), Board of Agricultural Engineering of the Professional Regulation Commission (BOAE-PRC), Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD), Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRICE), Bureau of Product Standards (BPS), Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers and Distributors Association Foundation, Inc. (AMMDA), International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), National Meat Inspection Council (NMIC), Susi Foundation, Cavite State University (CvSU), De La Salle University, and University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), initiated the drafting of the Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standards.

In 2000, thirty five (35) agricultural engineering standards were drafted and published as Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standards Volume I series of 2001 (PAES I). PAES I consists of standards on production machinery (15), engineering materials (6), and agricultural structures (3). It underwent extensive technical reviews, circulations, and separate public hearings conducted by the National Agriculture and Fishery Council (NAFC) in Quezon City.

In 2001, additional twenty five (25) agricultural engineering standards were drafted and are contained in this Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standards Volume II Series of 2001 (PAES II). The Metals Industry Research and Development Council (MIRDC) was added as cooperating agency in the preparation of the standards. PAES II consists of standards on production machinery (8), engineering materials (7), and agricultural structures (10). Likewise, it underwent extensive technical reviews, circulations, and separate public hearings conducted by NAFC in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
The Department of Agriculture has adopted these standards (PAES I and PAES II) for agricultural engineering. All offices of DA, including its regional field units, service units, bureaus, attached agencies and corporations, shall adopt and comply with these standards. Similarly, PSAE and BOAE-PRC have adopted these standards as technical standards for the practice of agricultural engineering. These standards shall be used in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of engineering designs, plans, specifications and performance of agricultural machinery, materials and structures.

Production Machinery

PAES 110:2001 – Agricultural Machinery – Walking-type Agricultural Tractor – Specifications Part 2: Rotary-Tilling Type (Old)

This standard specifies the minimum requirements for walking-type agricultural tractor which is classified as rotary tilling-type. It also includes requirements on workmanship and finish; warranty for construction and durability; maintenance and operation; and marking and labeling.

PAES 116:2001 – Agricultural Machinery – Small Engine – Specifications

This standard specifies the requirements for construction and performance of fully equipped internal combustion engines with one or two cylinders of up to 20 kW rating used for agricultural purposes. It also includes requirements on workmanship and finish; warranty for construction and durability; maintenance and operation; and marking and labeling.

PAES 118:2001 – Agricultural Machinery – Four-Wheel Tractor – Specifications (Old)

This standard specifies the requirements for the construction and operation of agricultural four-wheel tractor. This is applicable to two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive tractors with a net power range of 4 kW to 400 kW. It contains requirements on construction materials, controls, hydraulic three-point linkage system, drawbar, transmission system, PTO shaft, wheel tread adjustment, brake system, wheel slip, hydraulic lift force capacity, tractor speed, and safety requirements. It also includes requirements on workmanship and finish; warranty for construction and durability; maintenance and operation; and marking and labeling.

PAES 119:2001 – Agricultural Machinery – Four-Wheel Tractor – Methods of Test (Old)

This standard specifies the methods of test and inspection for four-wheel tractor. Specifically, it shall be used to: (1) verify the requirements specified in PAES 118 and the specifications submitted by the manufacturer; (2) evaluate the operator’s manual as to clarity, usefulness and adaptability; (3) determine the laboratory performance of the machine (i.e. PTO performance test, maximum power test, test at full load and varying speed, test at varying load, hydraulic lifting force and power test, drawbar power test – ballasted and unballasted tractor, turning area and turning circle, position of center of gravity, and braking test); (4) determine the field performance of the machine; and (5) prepare a report on the results of the tests.

PAES 120:2001 – Agricultural Machinery – Disc Harrow – Specifications

This standard specifies the requirements for disc harrows used for four-wheel tractor. It also includes requirements on workmanship and finish; warranty for construction and durability; maintenance and operation; and marking and labeling.

PAES 121:2001 – Agricultural Machinery – Disc Plow – Specifications

This standard specifies the requirements for disc plows used for four-wheel tractor. It also includes requirements on workmanship and finish; warranty for construction and durability; maintenance and operation; and marking and labeling.

PAES 122:2001 – Agricultural Machinery – Seeder and Planter – Specifications

This standard specifies the requirements for construction and performance of various types of grain seeders with or without fertilizer applicator. This standard is not applicable to wetland seeder and planter. It contains requirements on field efficiency, working capacity and delivery rate. It also includes requirements on workmanship and finish; warranty for construction and durability; maintenance and operation; and marking and labeling.

PAES 123:2001 – Agricultural Machinery – Seeder and Planter – Methods of Test

This standard specifies the methods of test and inspection for various types of seeders and planters such as manually-operated, animal-drawn and tractor power-driven drill and planter with or without fertilizer applicator. This standard is not applicable to broadcaster and wetland seeder. Specifically, it shall be used to: (1) verify the requirements specified in PAES 122 and the specifications submitted by the manufacturer; (2) determine the laboratory performance of the seeder and planter; and (3) determine the field performance of the seeder and planter.

Engineering Materials

PAES 307:2001 – Engineering Materials – Helical Gears for Agricultural Machines – Specifications and Applications

This standard specifies gear classification, nomenclature, standard module, facewidth and power ratings of helical gears used for agricultural machines. This standard is used for the design of gear drives, which includes computation of center distance, and the determination of the module and gear combination that is most suitable for a drive.

PAES 308:2001 – Engineering Materials – Straight Bevel Gears for Agricultural Machines – Specifications and Applications

This standard is used for the design of gear drives, which includes the determination of the module and gear combination that is most suitable for the drive. This standard specifies gear classification, nomenclature, standard module, facewidth and power ratings.

PAES 309:2001 – Engineering Materials – Anti-Friction Bearings for Agricultural Machines – Specifications and Applications

This standard is used in the determination of the type and size of anti-friction bearing to be used in a specific application. This also guides the designer in the selection of rolling element (ball or roller) to be used. This standard specifies bearing classification, nomenclature, sizes, load ratings, design life, and selection guide for ball and roller bearings. This standard also presents the recommended design practice in selecting anti-friction bearings for agricultural machines.

PAES 310:2001 – Engineering Materials – Journal Bearings for Agricultural Machines – Specifications and Applications

This standard is used in the determination of the type and size of journal bearing to be used in a specific application. This standard presents journal bearing classification, sizes, PV limits for different journal bearing materials. This standard also presents the recommended design practice in selecting journal bearings for agricultural machines.

PAES 311:2001 – Engineering Materials – Bolts and Nuts for Agricultural Machines – Specifications and Applications

This standard covers bolt and nut classification, sizes, dimensions, material specifications for bolts and nuts used for agricultural machines. This standard also presents the recommended design practice in selecting the appropriate size and grade of bolt and nut to be used in a specific fastener assembly.

PAES 312:2001 – Engineering Materials – Rivets for Agricultural Machines – Specifications and Applications

This standard specifies rivet classification, sizes, dimensions, material specifications, and design practices in using rivets for agricultural machines. This standard also presents the recommended design practice in selecting the appropriate size of rivet to be used on a particular joint based on its load.

PAES 313:2001 – Engineering Materials – Screws for Agricultural Machines – Specifications and Applications

This standard specifies types, available sizes, dimensions, and material specifications of screws used for agricultural machines. This standard also presents the recommended design practice in selecting the appropriate size of screws on a particular application.

Agricultural Structures

PAES 401: 2001 – Agricultural Structure – Housing for Swine Production

This standard specifies the general requirements for swine housing. It includes general, structural and functional requirements. It specifies the location, space requirement, physical and structural requirements for floor, wall, and roof. Also, it specifies the functional requirements for pens, pen partition, pen gate, aisles, heaters, feeding and water trough, lighting, ventilation and storage for feeds and supplies.

PAES 402: 2001 – Agricultural Structure – Housing for Broiler Production  

This standard specifies the general requirements for broiler production housing. It specifies the location and orientation; space requirements; physical and structural requirements for floor, wall, pen, and roof. Also, it specifies the functional requirements for pens, cage, brooding area, lighting, aisles, feeding and water trough, lighting and ventilation.

PAES 403: 2001 – Agricultural Structure – Housing for Layer Production

This standard specifies the general requirements for layer production housing. It specifies the location and orientation; space requirements; physical and structural requirements for floor, wall, cages, and roof. Also, it specifies the functional requirements for pens, laying cage, nest, aisles, feeding and water trough, lighting and ventilation.

PAES 404: 2001 – Agricultural Structure – Housing for Goat and Sheep

This standard specifies the functional requirement for goat and sheep housing. It specifies the location; space requirements; physical and structural requirements for floor, wall, and roof. Also, it specifies the functional requirements for pens, feeding trough and hayracks, water trough, breeding facilities, milking area, lighting and field fencing.

PAES 405: 2001 – Agricultural Structure – Cattle Feedlot

This standard specifies the functional requirement for cattle feedlot. It specifies the location; space requirements; physical and structural requirements for floor, wall, and roof. Also, it specifies the functional requirements for pens, feeding and water trough, lighting, passage and drainage.

PAES 406: 2001 – Agricultural Structure – Cattle Ranch

This standard specifies the functional requirement for cattle ranch. It specifies the location; space requirements; functional requirements for access alley, holding pen, crowding pen, working chute, holding chute, loading chute, loading ramp, foothbath, weighing scale, feed storage and field fencing.

PAES 407: 2001 – Agricultural Structure – Housing for Dairy Cattle

This standard specifies the functional requirement for dairy cattle loose housing. It specifies the location; space requirements; physical and structural requirements for floor, wall, and roof. Also, it specifies the functional requirements for pens, feeding and water trough, passage, drainage and feed storage.

PAES 408: 2001 – Agricultural Structure – Carabao Feedlot

This standard specifies the functional requirement for carabao feedlot. It specifies the location; space requirements; physical and structural requirements for floor, wall, and roof. Also, it specifies the functional requirements for pens, feeding and water trough, cooling facilities, lighting and drainage.

PAES 413: 2001 – Agricultural Structure – Biogas Plant

This standard specifies the general requirements for the design and construction of a biogas plant utilizing animal wastes. It specifies the location requirements and sizing of components. It also specifies structural and functional requirements for mixing tank, inlet pipe, digester, gas chamber, outlet pipe, outlet tank, and ground water drainage.

PAES 415: 2001 – Agricultural Structure – Greenhouses

This standard specifies the requirements for site selection; floor area, functional and structural requirements of the greenhouse. Functional and structural requirements includes wall, frames, coverings, floor and walkways, bench, lighting, irrigation and drainage, work and storage area, ventilation and cooling system.
